If A Bear Went Potty In the Big Blue House
Pros
Shows the toilet and steps to potty training using muppets.
Cons
Children need to understand that they are meant to follow the lead of a muppet.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
It's a fun DVD to reinforce potty training at home.
With a toddler who it potty training, it is inevitable that a few potty training DVDs would end up in rotation at our house. We currently own Potty Power, Elmo's Potty Time and Potty Time with Bear.
Personally, I think my son gets more out of Potty Time. But, my husband prefers Potty Time with Bear. No one in the house seems to appreciate or enjoy Elmo's Potty Time. It is by The Jim Henson Company. Potty Time with Bear features a big brown bear named Bear, a lemur named Treelo, a small bear named Ojo, a mouse named Tutters and otters named Pip and Pop.
Comparisons at a Glance
1. Potty Time with Bear uses child-friendly characters Bear, Ojo, Treelo, Shadow, Pip and Pop to illustrate the benefits of using the potty. There are songs, lessons and children interviews.
2. Potty Power uses real children sitting on the potty and parading their underwear, a talking roll of toilet paper, catchy songs and one story to teach using the potty. It looks like a college production - but it seems to really speak to children.
3. Elmo's Potty Time is the most disappointing. How they plan on teaching potty training without even showing anyone sitting on the potty is beyond me. But they use muppets to teach the importance of using the potty, staying clean, etc. And, of course, a few child interviews.
WHY WE LOVE POTTY TIME WITH BEAR
This DVD comes with three shows, but only one about potty training - When You've Got to Go. The other two do complement it well, since they area about growing up and independence. The accompanying shows are called If at First You Don't Succeed and Call It a Day.
When You've Got to Go has two potty songs - The Potty Chair sung by Bear and a very catchy Toileteer song instigated by twin otters Pip and Pop. There are a few mini stories going on. Tutters is so busy playing checkers that he doesn't want to use the toilet. But he is so busy trying to hold it in, he can't concentrate. Finally Bear suggests he uses the potty. Tutters sits on the potty, flushes, wipes and washes hands. Then he goes on to win the game. Then they talk about Ojo who was so busy playing hide and seek with Treelo that she waits too long to use the potty and has a little mess on the floor. Bear helps her clean up, gently suggests listening to her body, lets her know accidents happen - and then off Ojo goes to play again. Then Bear gets into a discussion with Treelo about diapers and how much better and more comfortable it is to play without them. And finally, Pip and Pop introduce the catchy Toileteer song. At the end, Bear reviews the days events with Luna.
The other two shows on the DVD complement the potty one. If at First You Don't Succeed speaks to children about practice makes perfect. Ojo pretends to be a BIG BEAR like Bear. So she and Bear go berry picking to make triple berry pie. After some instruction on how to pick berries, Bear let's her do it on her own - but she gets scared. But in the end, with Bear's support, she picks enough berries to make the pie. Also in this show are Pip and Pop trying to hula hoop. But they think the hula hoop is broken because they cannot get it to work. But all they need is practice to keep it going. The songs on this show are You Gotta Keep at It and the rap We're Hoopin'.
The last show is Call it a Day. It's the end of the day at the Big Blue House. So Tutters, Treelo, Pip, Pop and Ojo are going to sleep in the living room for a sleepover and Bear is going to tell them a goodnight story and then off to bed. The songs are What's That Smell and Pond. Bar reviews the days events - Pip and Pop swimming, Tutters well-visit, Ojo playing with her doll and cleaning up at the end of the day.
OVERALL
This is a good addition to your video collection to reinforce potty training. I definitely recommend it, combined with Potty Power. If at First You Don't Succeed is a cute additional show on the DVD. But, the last show on the DVD, Call it a Day, is slow and we seldom watch it.
