The Dave Brubeck Quartet's 1959 album Time Out changed the sound of jazz and American music. Brubeck's experimentation with meter, harmony and even Turkish rhythms eventually earned him the cover of Time Magazine; the first jazz musician to achieve such a feat. Saxophonist Paul Desmond's composition "Take Five" went on to become the first million-selling jazz instrumental single on the Billboard Hot 100. This folio celebrates the album's 50th anniversary with full-color artwork from the original record, and a 10 page write-up from jazz historian Ted Gioia. All seven compositions from the monumental recording have been carefully arranged for Easy Piano. A legendary jazz artist noted for his daring improvisations, Dave Brubeck is also a composer of many works for performance by classical musicians. He studied composition with the French composer, Darius Milhaud, who encouraged Brubeck to compose using the language of jazz as well as classical music. Brubeck himself notes that perhaps his best compositions were created ‘at the moment for the moment’. Both Chromatic Fantasy Sonata and Two-Part Adventures take their inspiration from the music of J. S. Bach. Rising Sun is taken from the 1965 album Jazz Impressions of Japan while The Salmon Strikes is a tribute to pianist John Salmon, with whom Brubeck has enjoyed a long association and who performs on this recording. One of the more obscure Dave Brubeck albums is really a showcase for the young singer Carmen McRae who performs nine numbers: six composed by the pianist/leader, one song apiece by altoist Paul Desmond and bassist Eugene Wright and the lesser-known standard "Paradiddle Joe." McRae is in fine voice but strangely enough all of the songs (except for "Strange Meadowlark") have been long forgotten. Stronger material would have resulted in a more memorable session. ~ Scott Yanow
