Nikon CoolPix 5400: Decent camera but can it trump the competition?

byyusakugo Jul 11, 2003
57 Helpfuls 58 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Tons of features, decent battery life, excellent closeup macro ability, etc.
Cons soft images, images less sharp than my Canon S50, slightly worse image than 5000
Recommended it? Yes

I don't know what it is with digital cameras and my wallet. I usually have my credit card out to buy before I really think things through... problem is that this time, I'm not so happy with the purchase.

I got the Nikon CoolPix 5400 at a ridiculous price that I have not been able to... Read full review »

Nikon Coolpix 5400 in the field - durable, intuitive, ergonomic.

Pros Good image quality for a digital camera, durable, intuitive, reasonably fast zoom.
Cons Shutter lag, focusing could be faster, poor low light focusing, image quality could be...
Recommended it? Yes

Several fine reviews of the this camera have already been written, so I'm going to focus on my field experience with the Nikon Coolpix 5400.

Durability

This camera has taken its fair share of bumps and is no worse for the wear. It's hit the floor of a Jeep a couple times,... Read full review »

Pros Cool design, very full featured, 15 scene modes
Cons Image quality and performance not as good as I expected.
Recommended it? Yes

As there are several excellent reviews already listed here that go over the specifications for this camera, I will not repeat any of that info. Plus you can get all the specs you want from Nikon.com -

I will stick to what I liked about it, what I didn't, and my conclusions:

Comparison and review of Nikon 5400

bynick_t Sep 28, 2003
14 Helpfuls 15 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Wide angle lens. Excellent metering. Minimal artifacts. Good grip. Good software.
Cons Bad low light focussing. Slow image processing. Small preview screen.
Recommended it? Yes

Comparison: I compared five 5M cameras before settling on the Nikon 5400. Film wise I've dabbled with photography for quite a while, starting with an Olympus XA1, and I've had a Canon EOS 1000F SLR for 12 years. I bought an Olympus D-540L some time ago, which is 0.75M camera. It's taken some nice... Read full review »

Pros many features, easy to learn/use, high quality built, excellent photos, small...
Cons no low light focus aid
Recommended it? Yes

I bought Nikon 5400 after about 3 months of researching. I had an old Olympus D450-Z 1.3 MP and it was about time to upgrade. I am not a photographer but I know a thing or two, and I am trying to learn how to be close to one.

Before I buy anything, especially if it is something expensive... Read full review »

Pros Really nice camera, worked well for 18 mo... then CCD issue.
Cons Horrible customer service! CCD recall does not cover 5400!!!
Recommended it? No

The camera worked very well for quite some time. Then images went black/blurry (CCD issue), the recall for this issue is only for 5700 cameras not 5400!!! Read full review »

A Camera for the Outdoors Man

byfrankie_greek Sep 23, 2003
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Wide Angle Lens. Produces very rich, accurate colors. Small size, easy to tote around.
Cons Dim light focus problem. ISO 400 has too much noise. No RAW file mode.
Recommended it? Yes

This is my third digital camera. I compared the Nikon 5400 with the Sony DSC-V1 and the Cannon G5, before I bought. I picked the Nikon 5400 mainly because of the wide angle lens. I haven't taken a picture yet, where I needed a wider angle than the Nikon 5400 produced. The Sony V1 and Cannon G5... Read full review »

Nikon 5400 is the best travel camera

byspirop Oct 30, 2003
5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros It is the world's lightest, most compact full featured digital camera for the...
Cons It is not the ideal snapshooter's camera for family photography.
Recommended it? Yes

First of all, I will admit that the 5400 is not necessarily the ideal camera for the family snapshooter. It is a bit more complicated to use than other cameras. It doesn't focus as fast indoors as other cameras which have a focus assist light, and its built-in flash provides illumination that is a... Read full review »

I Love My Nikon 5400!!!

byagentcisco Feb 6, 2005

Pros Metal Body, Nikon quality, great pictures, manual mode, external flash opt, solid camera...
Cons Heavy, big (but metal body), battery life average...otherwise for the money cant be beat!
Recommended it? Yes

I was browsing in a store, when I saw this gem for under $400 (w/rebate!). A metal body Nikon, with 5.1 megapixels, 4 optical zoom, flash extension slot for Nikon flashes, and a lot of features I dont need yet (which I will probably use later). When I put this camera in my hand, it felt SOLID... Read full review »

Nikon Coolpix 5400 Digital Camera

byrabouffard Feb 28, 2005
3 Helpfuls 4 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros none
Cons macro mode useless shutter lag Nikon Customer service is poor
Recommended it? No

Expensive, cryptic controls, poor image quality, poor fit and finish, purchased for use as clinical dental camera, won't focus on mirrors in macro mode. Manual override not possible. Long delay between activation of shutter and capture of image makes this camera useless for action/sports photos... Read full review »
