Good Mid Level Digital Camera

Pros Stylish, good quality photos, large memory capacity.
Cons big and clunky, gets an error message a lot
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A camera that takes clear crisp photos with minimal fuss. easy to send via the web. A good choice for beginners to mid level users
Let me state right away that I am not a camera professional or claim to be a techno guru. Far from it, I am a new mom who wanted to take loads of photos and share with family on the web. I know what I want out of a camera and that's about it. If you are looking for a technical expert and pixel size discussions then this review is not the right review (sorry). But I will tell you my experiences with this camera.

We purchased our digital camera at Circuit City while we waiting the birth of our new baby. We figured we would be taking LOTS of photos over the next year or so. We took the plunge and plunked down $600 for this camera. I winced at the price but who could argue about getting a new camera for our big adventure?

The good

The camera itself is sleek and well designed. There was a slight learning curve such as where to place the round wheel that describes the functions. I was interested in the following:

a). taking a clear picture, b). reviewing the picture immediately c). taking a movie, d). reviewing the movie immediately e). sending pictures and movies over email to family and friends.

I am happy to report that I was able to do all of the above with minimal effort. The camera has an auto focus feature which is pretty standard on digital cameras. This helped me reduce the number of unfocused pictures I took. The autozoom feature is nice too, and lets me zoom in or out quickly.

There is an autoflash focus which can be set to single or multiple flash. This feature works well and reduces red eye. The flash is mounted inside the top of the camera and pops out when flashing. I have to remember to put the flash back inside the camera when I am finished. It looks fragile.

By adjusting the wheel on the top right of the camera, you can change functions to reviewing all your pictures stored on your card, and make a short movie. There are no words on the wheel but the pictures are easy to understand.

By selecting the review pictures mode, I flip open the back panel and there is a screen that is in color and allows me to view all of the photos on my memory card. This is my favorite feature and allows me to select just the right picture immediately. Again, I am careful with this as it looks fragile and looks like the door panel can break off easily.

The pictures itself can be set to display date and time in a variety of colors and placements. The overall quality of the photos is good. The color is sharp, pictures are well focused and they look very good - a big improvement from my old non digital camera.

The videos I shoot are short but I like them anyway and they come with audio. These I rarely send over the web as they take so much memory and time to send.

This brings me to ease of saving to the computer. This camera comes with a rechargable battery pack which holds a very long charge - many hours. It's easy to put the battery pack into the camera and I'm off. To load pictures, you must load the software that came with the camera and stick the memory card into a USB port adaptor.

The Bad

Camera is a little clunky and I feel I have to use great care so I won't break something off of it. It is also heavy! I wish it could be a little more durable.
The shutter speed is a little slow - I wish that could be faster as well. Several times I have a great shot only to find that the shutter snaps a half second later. There are errors that I get such as "System Error" which requires me to shut the camera off and power up again. Not sure what this is about but it is annoying to say the least.

Overall

A good mid level camera - takes good crisp photos with minimal fuss. I suppose if I read the manual more throughly and used every feature I would be taking even better photos. Oh well!
