One morning recently we were having coffee with our good friend Gary Blankenberg, a man who has probably forgotten more about guitars than most will ever know, and the topic of discussion was the Les Paul Junior. We agreed that it may be the ultimate rock and roll tone machine; the lean, single-pickup configuration just begs for it to be played wide open. Then Gary said, "Hey, you know what would be cool? Introduced in 1963, the Gibson Firebird brought a brand new and radical design to the world of electric guitars. With its neck-through-body construction, asymmetrical body shape, and reverse headstock, the Firebird was unlike anything else around. In 1965, in an effort to boost sales, Gibson reversed the design of the Firebird, making the bass horn slightly longer than the treble side, as well as switching the layout of the headstock.
