The swarmandal or Indian harp is an Indian zither that is today most commonly used as an accompanying instrument for vocal Hindustani Classical music (the classical music of North India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh). The name combines swara (notes) and mandal (group), representing its ability to produce a large number of notes; it is also known popularly as Sur-mandal. Swarmandals measure from twenty-four to thirty inches in length and twelve to fifteen inches in width. The singer may choose to employ any number of strings from 21 to 36. A sharp half-inch ridge on both sides of the swarmandal stands a little apart from the nails on which the strings are tightened. This ridge functions as a bridge on both sides. The swarmandal is similar to the autoharp or zither in many respects. Some of the... Less

The sitar is a plucked stringed instrument predominantly used in Hindustani (Indian) classical music, where it has been ubiquitous since the Middle Ages. It derives its resonance from sympathetic strings, a long hollow neck and a gourd resonating chamber. The sitar became known in the western world through the work of Pandit Ravi Shankar beginning in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The sitar saw use in popular music after The Beatles featured the sitar in their compositions, namely "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" and "Within You Without You". Shortly after, The Rolling Stones used a sitar in "Paint It, Black" and a brief fad began for using the instrument in pop songs. The sitar's curved frets are movable, allowing fine-tuning, and raised so that sympathetic strings can run... Less

There is something primal, soothing and beautiful about classical Indian music, a tradition which is one of the oldest in the world. It is said that the original masters of music from India were able to make rain happen spontaneously during the dry season or even light a candle simply by playing the appropriate ragas (traditional Indian melodies) with the right intention. Today, even if those wonders are not to be found (at least in plain sight), the power of music to affect our mood is still undeniable. A simple melody can bring back memories or it can simply make us feel happy, sad, longing or even euphoric. This compilation of ragas and traditional instruments were specially designed to allow for an experience of deep relaxation and calm. This compilation by Music for Deep... Less

The Shehnai, or Mangal Vadya, is an aerophonic (wind) instrument, a double reed conical oboe, common in North India and West India, made out of wood, with a metal flare bell at the end. Its sound is thought to create and maintain a sense of auspiciousness and sanctity and, as a result, is widely used during marriages, processions, and in temples of West India. This tube-like instrument gradually broadens towards the lower end. It usually has between six and nine holes. It employs two sets of double reeds, making it a quadruple reed woodwind. By controlling the breath, various tunes can be played on it. The origin of North Indian shehnai is believed to be from persian Zurna. The shehnai is thought to have been created by improving upon the pungi (a woodwind folk instrument used primarily... Less

A bamboo flute is remarkable in its simplicity. It is a legendary folk instrument associated with Lord Krishna. The hindi word bansuri is a synthesis of baans meaning bamboo, and sur meaning musical note. The Indian flute is melodious and a wide range of notes is achieved from simple calibration of the air column in the bamboo. A community of craftsmen living in Pilibhit has made making flutes from bamboo a hereditary family enterprise. Only a few master craftsmen know the closely guarded secret of indexing the musical notes precisely, which is done by piercing the bamboo to make holes for placement of fingers. The professional flutes are made from seasoned bamboos, which are carefully selected and stored before conversion. Great musicians of the Indian classical tradition source their... Less

Bansuris range in size from less than 12" to nearly 40". There are two varieties of bansuri: transverse, and fipple. Ragas and raginis, musical personalities of Indian classical music, are characterized by their tonal configuration and unique blend of feelings. Within the raga's voice lies a suggestion of our connection with time and nature. Indian music is not so much about creating new forms as it is about preparing the artist to be a pure vehicle for melodic structures that have existed for centuries. Initially, the creative process through which a raga enfolds demands memory and reflection. As the raga develops and its emotive intent is stabilized upon the support of proper intonation, spontaneous improvisation frees the artist into an unbounded space. All the qualities of the raga's character ultimately appear everywhere without effort. This CD begins with a raga of the early hours of the... Less

In origin the ektara was a regular string instrument of wandering bards and minstrels from India and is plucked with one finger. The ektara usually has a stretched single string, an animal skin over a head (made of dried pumpkin/gourd, wood or coconut) and pole neck or split bamboo cane neck. Pressing the two halves of the neck together loosens the string, thus lowering its pitch. The modulation of the tone with each slight flexing of the neck gives the ektara its distinctive sound. There are no markings or measurements to indicate what pressure will produce what note, so the pressure is adjusted by ear.

The pungi, also called the been, or bin is a wind instrument played by snake charmers in India. The pungi was originally developed as an Indian folk music instrument. It is important for religious purposes and music in India. It is played by snake charmers in street performances. The pungi is traditionally made from a dried bottle gourd. Often, the neck of the gourd is carved for aesthetic reasons. On the other end, two reed or bamboo pipes are connected. One of the pipes has seven holes and plays the melody; the other pipe is for drone. The pipes are fitted to the gourd with beeswax, which can be adjusted for pitch modification. This pungi is a nice example of the common tourist market snake charmer been / pungi, made with a coconut ball. Professional version tends to be handmade and... Less
